Become magic at the boring stuff

Joel A

I’ve seen people work multiple jobs to pay the bills.

I’ve seen people become great communicators when it was required to improve a relationship.

I’ve seen people practice being positive, in lieu of being pessimistic.

I’ve seen people running around the streets at 4am in the cold before going to work.

Two important points connected include:

1.      People become great at something if it is important to them.

2.      Falling short is a consequence of habitual inconsistency.

I believe if more people would stay consistent with the boring stuff in jobs, we would see more people succeed.

One of the biggest strengths you can possess is urgent consistency.

However, be cautious that consistent bureaucracy is also poisonous to your business.

Some of the most important things in business are considered ‘the boring stuff’.

Lean in. Why the funeral face?

If you can become magic at the boring stuff you can build a foundation to success.

I believe individuals and businesses score an own goal as a result of flawed execution and commitment to the boring stuff. When you consistently prioritise the fun stuff, overall performance decreases and you experience an elevated level of business risk.

Don’t cancel that meeting with your staff.

Don’t miss reporting weekly metrics with accuracy.

Don’t delay setting and reviewing quarterly objectives.

Don’t skip over finalising that process, policy, or risk assessment.

It’s frustrating when people want to “change things up” when they become bored. Being bored isn’t a good reason to change.

I urge you to train your mind and embrace how to get excited about the boring stuff.

Why? Simply, without a strong foundation, your business is likely to crumble at the first sign of trouble. And It will make you one step closer to success in the long run.

Think about incremental rewards, gamification, and tangential immersion (a form of doing two tasks at once) with one task considered ‘fun’ as an option to cultivate perseverance.

Ultimately, there’s no escaping boring tasks. Of course, we should aim to do what we can to fill our jobs and lives with important engaging activities — but given the prevalence and importance of low-attention work in our personal and professional lives, we will benefit from finding ways to persist in these behaviours.

Think about it. Overnight successes take a decade.

Focus on what’s important.

(Picture has no connection to boring. It's simply an image of my son)
